# Don't blindly trust LLM responses. Threats to chatbots.

LLM chatbot responses are untrusted; attacker-crafted hyperlinks in responses get auto-fetched by chat apps, exfiltrating summarized conversation data.

**Target:** Chat application link-preview/unfurl bot (Discord, Slack, Telegram, Skype, Teams)
**Root cause:** LLM output is treated as trusted and inserted into chat context; chat apps auto-retrieve hyperlinks in messages, issuing server-side requests to attacker URLs.
**Steps:**
1. Induce indirect prompt injection so the LLM summarizes conversation history (e.g. passwords) and appends it to an attacker-controlled hyperlink.
2. LLM returns a response containing the crafted hyperlink.
3. Chat app auto-unfurls the link, issuing a server-side request (e.g. `Slackbot-LinkExpanding 1.0`) to the attacker URL with the appended data.
4. Attacker reads exfiltrated data from their server logs.
**How found:** Building a Discord chatbot and Yolo shell assistant gave hands-on feel for LLM behavior; observed that chat apps auto-inspect URLs by default, then tested which platforms fetch links via User-Agent logs.
**Exploitation:** Attacker plants indirect prompt injection in data the LLM ingests; the model summarizes chat history and appends it to an attacker URL; the chat platform's link-preview bot fetches the URL, delivering the data to the attacker.
**Escalation:** Chaining indirect prompt injection with link auto-retrieval turns a benign summarization into exfiltration of secrets like passwords.
**Insight:** Chat platforms' link-unfurl bots are server-side fetchers reachable from any message; if LLM output reaches chat, treat hyperlinks in responses as an exfil channel and check which apps auto-retrieve.
